Before a site can be optimised, there is background work to do – including analysing the site to see the current state of play. Identifying and examining the competitors in the same market is vital too – and of course, evaluating potential keywords and phrases for optimisation.

Forming a plan of action (split into short/medium/long term objectives) allows effort to be focussed in those areas which will provide the best return on investment – ensuring suitable monitoring strategies are in place and that the impact of optimisation campaigns can be measured effectively is an important pre-cursor to making changes too.
Making changes to the website as well as starting suitable link-building, social marketing and content marketing campaigns (as appropriate) – with training and/or services being provided to the best effect possible. Changes should be made gradually and cautiously, with the impact being tracked along the way.

It’s not a one-off thing. You have to monitor the market, constantly analyse the results and adapt to any changes in conditions – for example, if you invest money in optimising your site, successfully over-taking your main competitor, nothing stops them from doing the same in return.
